Listen, I know tumblr only cares about American news, but this is really fucking tragic, and if this doesn’t get an coverage I will be incredibly angry. The conservative’s bedroom tax has actually led to a woman taking her own life. Let me repeat that for you; a peice of… OH BOY I CAN GO TO TOWN ON THIS ONE. I worked in social housing for a while just before this is due to come in. This is as real as it sounds. The numbers are accurate, real, and even worse. Carers are affected. Let me go ahead and just say that again, CARERS FOR ELDERLY OR SICK PEOPLE, OR PEOPLE WHO NEED DAY-TO-DAY CARE are affected. If a house has a spare bedroom for a carer (who is not residing there as a tenant, which a lot aren’t), that’s a tax hike. IT IS ACTUALLY SICKENING. HA’s (Housing Associations) and any company that deals with social housing was STRONGLY against this, it would not be benifical in any way, and does a whole lot more harm to the country than just the people, the knock on effects are felt by companies, who have to, guess what, raise their prices to cover lost bills, people leaving and the carer bill. this whole scenario is maddening. Also, one fun fact from our company, out of everyone that called up our housing company about this, 20% of people would not have enough to eat due to this. Our housing company has encouraged a lot of people to get into the houseswap scheme, to hopefully try and mitigate this in the best way possible, but it can only really help fringe cases. Please get mad at this. point out it’s flaws, and let the government hear.
